5 Tips for Writing a Great Video Script for Your Business
Whether you’re looking to promote your business, promote an event or share your wins, we all know video is king and has to be a part of your marketing strategy. But if writing isn’t in your toolkit, it’s easy to get stuck on where to start.
As someone who is in the trenches everyday writing video scripts, here are five tips that will help you get from a blank page to watching your video on screen.
1. Rewrite Your Script from a Different Angle
Write your first draft, but then rewrite it from a different angle. One of the things I do is get my initial vibe down on paper, and then set the script aside and come back the next day and rewrite it from a totally different angle.
Think about ways to rearrange the information. For example, what if your closing line became your opening line? What direction would your story go if you just started on a different thought?
Also, consider moving some paragraphs around and looking at what you are trying to say from different angles? Rewriting opens the door to discovering interesting ways of conveying your message.
2. Change the Tone
Write a version where you change the tone. For example, write it with humor rather than a serious tone. Play with adding some irony to your script, or maybe take an investigative approach. Another option is to change who you are talking to. If you normally talk to a woman, write a draft as if you were talking to a man. Also, change the age of the person you are talking to…make the person older or younger.
This may not be the final version you record, but it is a useful tool for getting unstuck and getting creative.
3. Visualize
Remember, this is video. So, visualize the images that are going to be shown alongside the words that you are writing and try to match the words with the images. Also, if you have existing photos or videos that can help tell the story, keep those images in mind as you are writing your video script and write to them.
4. Get In an Inspired State
It’s not what you do, but how you do it. Writing about your business, service or event shouldn’t be approached as a task you check off a ‘to do’ list. It’s creative, so you need to get into a creative state. Finding that state is different for everyone. I listen to music a lot. You might like walking in nature, rolling with dog, or mediating. Do whatever works for you. The best ideas come from an inspired state, so find yours!
5. Write for the Audience
Remember that what you create someone will be watching it. So write it for them, not you. Why should they watch it from beginning to end? It comes back to marketing 101: What’s in it for them? The point is to share with people what you have to offer THEM…how you can make their day or job a little better, easier or just more fun!
Creating a great video begins with writing a great video script. Keep these tips in mind the next time you sit down to write a video script for your business.
